COMMUNITY GROUPS

Some coordination

of events is needed

by John Nolan

The Third Annual Stonewall Cleveland Pride Dinner is behind us now, and I suppose that we can begin to plan next year's Dinner. Before we begin that process, I have a request for our whole community, and I think that it will benefit all of us:

Let's all coordinate our calendars for 1995, okay?

It has become all too clear to me that there are more events

for lesbians, bisexuals and gay men than at any other time in my memory: social events, political events, fundraisers, and just fun times. I

that something else is happening in the community that night, and that they should expect a smaller crowd, if some of the people who usually attend are also a part of the other event.

As for sitting down at one table and scheduling the year, you're right, that would be difficult. But it's possible, isn't it? Maybe all of the groups in town could send their tentative calendars for 1995 to one central

STONEWALL

CLEVELAND

A lesbian gay political organization of Northeastern Ohio

know that no one event will interest everyone, and that no one person will attend every event, but I hope that we can schedule things in the future so that these choices don't have to be made because events are scheduled for the same time.

This shouldn't be too difficult for us to accomplish. We know that there are certain events that are seasonal, like the North Coast Men's Chorus' holiday concert, Pride week, Dancin' in the Streets, the "We Are Family" Picnic, the Cleveland Center's "Garden Party" fundraiser, and so on. We can reasonably predict which month each of these will occur each year, and maybe that should be our starting point.

Oh yes, I've heard the arguments against this idea. The "big" organizations will bully the "small" organizations into changing all their dates. The scheduling of a meeting for people to get together to schedule would be impossible. And I'm sure that there are more. But could we try? Maybe two ganizations won't agree to reschedule one of their events. At least they will both know

place (I wonder how Judy feels about the Center being the gathering place?) If specific dates are unavailable, at least one could

indicate that the event will be on "some Sunday afternoon in mid-to-late July," for example.

The work of negotiating schedule changes when conflicts do arise might not be easy, but I think that a coordinated approach to this issue would be beneficial, not only for each group, as it results in fewer scheduling conflicts, but, perhaps more importantly, as part of the process that brings our community together, i.e. working out our differences cooperatively. Anyway, I'd be willing to give it a try. How about the rest of you?

I realize that this article is not Stonewallrelated, strictly speaking. However, because part of the mission of Stonewall Cleveland is to improve the lives of lesbians, bisexuals and gay men in our community, I think that cooperating on something like a community calendar of special events does benefit all of us. For that reason I see it as appropriate for us to address as a group, and as a part of a larger community, of I am very proud to be a member. As always, thanks for reading this far.
